BOOK COVER Another Monkey A heartwarming story for ages 3 to 8 about love, gift-giving, and sharing

I started working on this book in January 2024 after my 41-year-old son Michael sent me the photo below of him holding his beloved monkey puppet–the one I had bought for him when he was 4 years old. I was amazed he still had it.

A photo of my son Michael and his beloved Monkeyin

As an assignment for a Children’s Literature course, I had written a story about Michael and his monkey puppet, Monkeyin. At that time, as an elementary school Vice-Principal, I shared the story often and the students in one class illustrated its pages. With my recent knowledge and skills in editing, formatting, and self-publishing, I decided to revisit this story and bring it to publication.

In real life and in this revived story, from his first hug, Michael carried his Monkeyin with him everywhere. Michael’s family, noticing his fondness for toy monkeys, began buying him another and another until he finally realized he had “too many monkeys” and he gave the five extra monkeys to his friends. His actions highlight the themes of love, gift-giving, and sharing (which is in the subititle of the book), along with generosity, gratitude, family, friendship, and sharing. By allowing his friends to choose the monkey they each wanted, he also demonstrated the importance of having a sense of ownership. This narrative leaves us with the heartwarming feeling that all the monkeys will be loved. The monkeys in the story are “sooo different!” and “just like us!”—which encourages discussions about diversity (being different and embracing difference), equity (being treated fairly), and inclusion (being accepted and valued). With its focus on important themes, I believed it to be worthwhile to be shared again and again. I was excited!

Here is the STORY SUMMARY:

Based on true events about the author’s 4-year-old son and his monkey puppet, readers will relate to this values-rich narrative if they have ever had or still have a stuffed animal, puppet, toy, or possession that is precious to them. Find out what happens when Michael realizes he has “too many monkeys!” Themes include love, gift-giving, generosity, gratitude, family, friendship, sharing, ownership, and collections. The story also reinforces manners, colors, numbers one to six, and stores in the community. The monkeys in the story are “sooo different,” and “just like us,” which welcomes discussions about diversity (being different and embracing difference), equity (being treated fairly), and inclusion (being accepted and valued).
For ages 3 to 8, repetition and description encourage young children and even the most reluctant readers to read. The bolded, italicized, and CAPITALIZED words along with the punctuation and grammar help to encourage fluency, expressive reading, and confidence.

UNIQUE to this cumulative pattern book is the illustrations are created by the author’s SIX grandchildren, ages 6 to 16. These ILLUSTRATORS, along with the "AFTERWORD,” help to motivate ALL children and adults to become ARTISTS and ILLUSTRATORS, RESEARCHERS and AUTHORS!
